The dricter of the project , Jennifer Crandall, asked me to join her in producing this rare gem of a documentary. We crisscrossed Alabama asking folks to recite for us. I helped produce many of the episodes. Afghans in Rome were coming out in support of family and freinds in Afghanistan. I asked a local Afghani freind whom I should film and talk to. He told me to wait for Malila Nazari. It was towards the end of the protest and I hadn’t interviewed anyone yet. I was getting nervous. Malila finally arrived and began reading a poem she had written called The Darkness. She wrote the poem after seeing a photo of a woman being beaten by the Taliban in Afghanistan. I produced the entire piece from start to finish shooting, editing, and adding subtitles.
